Self care is not selfish

Have you ever stopped to think how much you do for those around you?

While this is not a bad thing, many of us tend to want to keep those around us happy or content, and end up getting ourselves into a “people-pleasing” pattern. But how much time must go by before we realize we are forgetting to take care of ourselves too?

Self care is so important in today’s busy society. Whether you enjoy going for a walk, taking a bath, spending time with loved ones, reading a book, exercising, cooking, meditating, or even buying yourself some flowers, making sure to make time for what you love can significantly impact your health — the right way.

Chronic stress is something we may all undergo at some point in our lives, whether is from your job, school, home life, it is important to know how to manage this so that stress does not turn into illness. In Chinese Medicine, we believe stress is often the underlying cause of disease in the body. Stress causes hormones to fall out of balance and upsets homeostasis throughout the body.

Below are some tips to improve self care:

  • Establish a routine, whether you like them or not, our bodies respond well to routines, and they can improve your quality of life.

  • Have a good sleep schedule, rather than stying up late, scrolling mindlessly on your phone — try to unplug for about an hour before bed to allow your brain some rest, watch how your sleep will improve!

  • Eat healthy, we literally are what we eat, so its immensely important to know what you’re putting in your body. Proper nutrition can & will significantly restore balance to your body.

  • Make time to exercise! I cannot stress this enough, our body craves movement, its how the bones, joints & organs receive nourishment from all the fluids needed to maintain balance throughout the body.

  • If it is hard to exercise, start with a sauna + stretching a couple times a week, you’ll notice your body improve.

  • Lastly, find one small thing that makes YOU happy and try to do it every day.
